Good morning, everyone.
Today, we will welcome a group of ten American high school students to Keiwa for two days.
This is a special occasion. Not just for them—but for all of us.
Today, I want to talk to you about something simple, but important:
Being awake to the unique opportunities God gives us.
Most of the time, we go through life on “autopilot.”
We go to school, we go home, we do our homework… and the next day, we do it all again.
It’s easy to stop paying attention. We just get through the day.
But sometimes—just sometimes—God gives us a moment that’s different.
A moment that invites us to wake up.
To notice.
To take a step.
To make a memory.
For the American students visiting us today, this is one of those moments.
They’ve been studying Japanese for years.
They’ve worked hard, they’ve raised money, and they’ve looked forward to this trip for a long time.
And now, that dream is becoming real.
But here’s the important part:
You have the power to make this experience unforgettable for them—or forgettable.
How do I know that? Because I’ve been in their shoes.
Many of you know this, but when I was in high school, Keiwa had an overseas program in my hometown in California.
For six summers, my family hosted Keiwa students in our home.
And then, when I was 18, I came to Japan for a four-week homestay—and I stayed with a Keiwa student’s family.
Just like the American students are doing today.
During my stay, I went to Tokyo Disneyland, Asakusa, Shibuya…
but do you know what the most memorable part of my trip was?
It was here—at Keiwa.
Now, that might sound strange.
Back then, like now, there were no shops or restaurants near Keiwa.
It was June—hot, humid, and rainy.
So why was Keiwa the best part?
Because of the students.
On my first day, we arrived during the school festival.
Back then, the opening ceremony was held in the gym.
There was a band playing on the stage—where the training room is now—and all the students were dancing and singing like a mosh pit.
I had never seen anything like it!
Suddenly, a Keiwa student grabbed my arm and shouted, “Let’s go!” and pulled me into the crowd.
I couldn’t understand much Japanese, and he didn’t speak much English, but in that moment, something amazing happened.
We connected.
That experience created a friendship.
For the rest of the trip, Keiwa students showed us kindness, excitement, and curiosity.
They talked with us, brought us to classes, took photos, gave us strange snacks to try—
they made us feel like we belonged.
They weren’t perfect English speakers.
I wasn’t a good Japanese speaker.
But that didn’t matter.
What mattered was the interest.
The effort.
The heart.
One girl from my group made a friend at Keiwa, and they’re still friends today—22 years later.
They even live near each other in California now.
That friendship started with just one small step.
One person who said, “Let’s go.”
So today, and tomorrow, you have the same opportunity.
To say “hello.”
To take someone to class.
To ask a question.
To share a laugh.
You don’t need perfect English.
Just an open heart and a little courage.
Don’t sleep through this moment.
God may be giving you a chance to grow, to learn, to bless someone—and be blessed in return.
As the Bible says in Hebrews 13:2:
“Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.”
Let’s welcome our guests with kindness, energy, and joy.
Let’s make this a moment we’ll all remember—for the next 22 years.
Let’s pray.
