Good morning.

Over the past three years, I’ve had an incredible opportunity to be a translator for foreign athletes at the Yogibo Athletics Challenge Cup, a professional track and field tournament held annually at Big Swan Stadium.

As a high school track and field coach, I was thrilled to not only be around Olympic athletes but to also learn what makes them so successful at their sport.

I thought I might learn some secrets and be able to share them with you, but what I discovered was actually much simpler—but much more inspiring.

These athletes came from all over the world. America, England, Australia, Czech Republic, Latvia, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, India, Taiwan, China, and South Korea. I got to be with these athletes from the time they arrived at the stadium until the time they left. I watched them practice, eat, talk with their coaches, and even stand right next to them while they were competing. I got to see everything.

After watching these athletes closely, I was surprised by something.

They weren’t practicing complex drills, and they didn’t rely on special equipment or secret techniques.

Instead, their focus was entirely on the basics.

They stretched, ran simple drills, and focused on their form. It was nothing complex.

Just basic stuff.

At first, I couldn’t believe these world-class athletes were keeping it so basic.

So, I asked a coach from the Philippines, ‘What’s the secret to becoming an Olympic athlete?’

I was expecting a profound answer, but he simply smiled and said, ‘To be honest, there is no secret.

The only difference between the professionals and the amateurs is that professionals show up every day and give 100%.

They’re always thinking about how they can improve.’

That answer was simple yet eye-opening.

I later asked other coaches and athletes, and every answer was the same.

After that conversation, I started to see that in every athlete around me.

No matter their event or country, they all shared this incredible focus on making the basics their foundation.

Then it hit me.

Though what they were doing looked simple, it was actually more complex.

They weren’t just practicing these basic movements; they were practicing them perfectly.

It was inspiring to see that what I once thought of as ‘just the basics’ was actually the core of being a true professional – perfecting the basics.

After watching these athletes, I came to realize that greatness isn’t made by secrets, luck, or shortcuts.

Rather, greatness is built on simple habits done consistently, each day trying to be a little better than the day before.

So, as we look to the future, let’s remember that whether it’s in sports, school, or any goal you set, big dreams are built from small steps.

Each day is an opportunity to work toward what truly matters to you.

So, let’s take this lesson from these athletes—a professional is simply an amateur who doesn’t give up.

The journey may feel ordinary at times, but each step is shaping you into something extraordinary.
